Justin Nelson Calls for New Hiring Playbook at JP Morgan

The traditional finance industry interview, built around rapport and small talk, may be quietly filtering out some of the strongest analytical minds in the labor market. That is the view of Justin Nelson, Managing Director and Head of the Asset Management and Financial Principals Coverage Team at J.P. Morgan Private Bank in Connecticut, who leads a team managing over $15 billion in client assets and has watched the same hiring pattern repeat across the industry for years.

Rethinking the Interview

Nelson argues that employers need to fundamentally change how they evaluate neurodiverse candidates during the hiring process itself. “Employers really need to change how they think about engaging with these people,” he said. For Justin Nelson JP Morgan, that means moving away from open conversational interviews and toward formats that let candidates demonstrate skill directly, rather than penalizing them for discomfort with small talk that has little bearing on job performance.

Partnering With Outside Experts

Nelson also points employers toward organizations built specifically to bridge this gap in the hiring pipeline. He works with Broad Futures, a charity that matches neurodiverse candidates with employers. “They work with employers to match up people who are neurodiverse. They operate by helping employers get educated and having them run a program for them to help them select candidates,” he said. Justin Nelson frames these partnerships as a practical shortcut for firms unsure where to begin this work on their own.

Justin Nelson’s push extends beyond his own desk at JP Morgan. He wants the playbook, redesigned interviews paired with outside partnerships, treated as standard practice rather than a novelty limited to a handful of forward-leaning teams within the wealth management industry.

Nelson is careful to separate advocacy from charity in these remarks. His argument for JP Morgan and its peers rests on the idea that neurodiverse candidates deserve a fair evaluation on merit, not special treatment, and that fair evaluation alone would change hiring outcomes considerably.
